Granite for a garden table

Granite is volcanic natural stone and one of the hardest materials there is. Every top has its own pattern of grains and veins, so your table looks like no other.

Quick guide

  • You want gloss: Tan Brown polished.
  • You want deep, matt black: Nero Assoluto honed.
  • You want grey or dark brown: Steel Grey or Coffee Brown, both with a leather finish.
  • You want no upkeep on the top at all: choose ceramic.

The four granite types

  • Steel Grey leather: grey granite with a leather finish.
  • Coffee Brown leather: dark brown granite with a leather finish.
  • Tan Brown polished: brown granite, polished to a gloss.
  • Nero Assoluto honed: black granite, honed to a matt surface.

Because natural stone differs from top to top, a photo only tells part of the story. Order material samples and look at them outside, in the light of your own patio. They are ordered per piece and refunded when you return them.

Sealing and cleaning a granite garden table

Granite must be sealed after delivery and again every two to three years.

  • Daily: a damp cloth with a pH-neutral cleaner.
  • Avoid: vinegar, lemon or other acidic cleaners.
  • Hot pan: always on a trivet. Thermal shock can crack granite.

Granite or ceramic for outdoors?

Choose granite if you want the depth of real stone and accept the sealing. Choose ceramic if you want a top that is heat resistant and never needs treating.

Ceramic has 29 colours and also comes round; granite has four types and is thicker, 30 mm against 12 or 20 mm. Ceramic is more sensitive to a hard knock on the edge. A wider overview is on natural stone garden tables.

Sizes, shapes and number of people

A granite top can be up to 2400 × 1000 mm. You choose a rectangle, oval, Danish oval or a rectangle with semicircular ends.

Allow 700 to 750 mm of table edge per person and at least 800 mm of free space around it. At 2400 mm long, three people sit along each long side. Standard table height is 760 mm.

A frame under a granite top

You choose the frame in steel or stainless steel, both welded in Maasbree. Steel with outdoor primer and stainless steel are equally suitable outdoors; the choice is about looks.

  • Steel: 10 standard colours, extra primer layer under the powder coat. Powder coating could in theory be damaged by a heavy impact.
  • Stainless steel: brushed 304 stainless steel, no coating. Fingerprints show but wipe off easily.

A black honed top on a black frame gives a calm, dark whole; brushed stainless steel adds more contrast.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I seal a granite garden table?
After delivery and then again every two to three years. In between, a damp cloth with a pH-neutral cleaner is enough.
How do I clean a granite garden table?
With a pH-neutral cleaner and a damp cloth. Do not use vinegar, lemon or other acidic products; they attack the stone.
Can I put a hot pan on a granite garden table?
No, always use a trivet. Granite is hard, but a hot pan can crack it through thermal shock.
Which granite types can I choose?
Four: Steel Grey leather, Coffee Brown leather, Tan Brown polished and Nero Assoluto honed. Polished is glossy, honed is matt.
How large can a granite garden table be?
Up to 2400 × 1000 mm, with a top 30 mm thick. Within that you set the size yourself, to the millimetre.
