Choose chairs for your tableIs a granite dining table right for you?
Granite is volcanic natural stone and one of the hardest materials for a table top. The crystal pattern differs from slab to slab, so your table really is yours. The trade-off is care.
Quick guide
Real stone, every top different: granite. No maintenance and a hot pan straight on the table:ceramic. Warm wood with grain:oak.
Four types of granite
A granite table top comes in four types, each with its own colour and finish:
- Steel Grey leather: calm grey with a matt, lightly textured leather finish.
- Coffee Brown leather: warm brown with the same leather finish; works well with wood and earth tones.
- Tan Brown polished: dark pattern with a sheen; polishing shows the crystals most clearly.
- Nero Assoluto honed: almost black and matt, with a soft look.
Polished gives a sheen, honed is matt. The difference is in look and feel; the stone itself is equally hard. If you are torn between types, order material samples; they are refunded when you return them.
Granite dining table: pros and cons
- Hard: granite is one of the hardest materials; cutlery and crockery leave the top alone.
- Every top different: formed by volcanic activity, so no two tops are alike.
- 30 mm thick: a full stone edge that looks heavy and calm.
- Not heat-resistant: a hot pan can crack the top through thermal shock. Always use a trivet.
- Sealing: after delivery and then every two to three years, so stains do not soak in.
Size: up to 2400 × 1000 mm
A granite table top is at most 2400 × 1000 mm. Allow 700 to 750 mm of table edge per person and at least 800 mm of free space around it. At 2400 mm, three people sit along each long side, with room for two more at the ends. For a larger table, look at ceramic or oak.
Granite tables are available rectangular, oval, Danish oval and half circle. More on the shapes under Danish oval dining tables and oval dining tables.
Base: steel or stainless steel
Under granite you can choose steel or stainless steel, both welded in our workshop in Maasbree, the Netherlands. Steel is powder-coated in a fine texture, 3 to 5 times thicker than wet paint, in 10 standard colours; a heavy impact can damage the coating. Grade 304 stainless steel is brushed and naturally corrosion-resistant; fingerprints show, but wipe off easily. The choice is about looks. See steel dining tables and stainless steel dining tables.
Caring for granite
Granite needs sealing after delivery and again every two to three years. For daily cleaning use a damp cloth or a pH-neutral cleaner. Do not use acidic products such as vinegar or lemon: they attack the stone. More on the care page.
Granite or ceramic?
Choose granite if you want real stone and accept the sealing. Choose ceramic if you want a top with no maintenance, where a hot pan can go straight on, in 29 colours. Granite sits under natural stone dining tables; all natural stone in the range is granite.
