Natural stone or stone look: which suits you?

If you are looking for a stone dining table, you are often choosing between real natural stone and ceramic with the look of stone. The difference lies in character and care.

Quick guide

Real stone, every top different, care is no problem:granite. Stone or marble look without maintenance, pan straight on the table:ceramic.

Why granite as natural stone?

All natural stone in the range is granite. Granite is volcanic natural stone and one of the hardest materials; cutlery and crockery leave the top alone. Marble, travertine and bluestone are not in the range. If you are after the pattern of marble, ceramic in marble look is the alternative.

Four types of granite

  • Steel Grey leather: grey and matt, with a lightly textured finish.
  • Coffee Brown leather: warm brown, the same matt finish.
  • Tan Brown polished: dark and glossy, the crystals stand out clearly.
  • Nero Assoluto honed: almost black and matt.

Granite is available polished (sheen) or honed (matt). Each type in detail: granite dining tables.

Natural stone dining table: pros and cons

  • Its own pattern: no two tops are alike. What you see in the showroom is an example; your top has a pattern of its own.
  • Hard and heavy: a 30 mm top gives a calm, stone edge.
  • Not heat-resistant: a hot pan can crack the top through thermal shock. Always put pans and dishes on a trivet.
  • Care: granite needs sealing after delivery and again every two to three years.

Size and shape

A granite table top is at most 2400 × 1000 mm. Allow 700 to 750 mm of table edge per person and at least 800 mm of free space around it; standard height is 760 mm. The stone tables come rectangular, oval, Danish oval and half circle. For a larger table, choose ceramic or wood.

A base under a stone top

You choose steel or stainless steel, both welded in our workshop in Maasbree, the Netherlands. Steel is powder-coated in a fine texture, 3 to 5 times thicker than wet paint, in 10 standard colours. Grade 304 stainless steel is brushed and naturally corrosion-resistant. The choice is about looks; see steel dining tables and stainless steel dining tables.

Cleaning natural stone

Use a damp cloth or a pH-neutral cleaner. Vinegar, lemon and other acidic products attack the stone. More tips on the care page.
