Walnut dining tables

On this page you will find all walnut dining tables, solid and 40 mm thick. In Dutch the wood is called both walnoot and notenhout; it is the same species.

Quick guide

  • You want dark wood without stain: choose walnut.
  • You want a lighter colour, a stain colour, or a table longer than 2600 mm: choose oak.
  • The table stands in full sun all day: expect the wood to turn slightly lighter, or choose ceramic.

Properties of walnut

  • Colour: deep chocolate brown with purple undertones.
  • Weight and stability: lighter than oak, yet dimensionally stable.
  • Knots: always filled in black with a two-component filler. There is no choice here, not even on an untreated top.
  • Thickness and size: 40 mm, up to 2600 × 1200 mm, made to measure to the millimetre.
  • Finish: clear lacquer, so the wood keeps its own colour.

Does walnut fade in the sun?

Yes, a little. Walnut can turn slightly lighter in long periods of direct sunlight. UV blockers in the lacquer limit this.

If your table stands in front of a large south-facing window, you will see the difference sooner. A runner or placemat that always lies in the same spot will leave an outline over time.

Walnut or oak

  • Colour: walnut is dark by nature; oak is honey to golden brown and comes in a stain colour.
  • Size: walnut up to 2600 × 1200 mm, oak up to 3000 × 1200 mm.
  • Knots: always black in walnut; light, dark or black in oak, matching the stain.
  • Outdoors: neither is suitable for outdoors.

Walnut dining tables in five shapes

Walnut dining tables come rectangular, round, oval, Danish oval and with semicircle ends. A round walnut table suits four to six people; for more seats choose an oval or Danish oval dining table.

What size walnut dining table?

Allow 700 to 750 mm per person and at least 800 mm of free space around the table. The standard table height is 760 mm.

  • 2000 mm long, with a seat at each end: 6 people.
  • 2400 mm long: 8 people.
  • 2600 mm is the maximum in walnut. For ten people, choose oak up to 3000 mm.

Which base suits walnut?

That is a choice on looks. Brushed grade 304 stainless steel gives a cool contrast with the dark wood; powder-coated steel in a dark colour keeps the whole calm.

Steel is welded in our workshop in Maasbree, the Netherlands, and powder-coated with a fine texture in one of 10 standard colours. Powder coating is a layer of lacquer that can be damaged by a heavy impact. Stainless steel shows fingerprints, but they are easy to wipe off. See stainless steel table bases and steel table bases.

Caring for a walnut dining table

  • Wipe the top with a damp cloth; do not use abrasives.
  • Put hot pans on a trivet.
  • Move whatever stands on the table permanently now and then, so the light falls evenly.
