Which dining chair suits your table?

Start with height. A standard dining table is 760 mm high. Allow 270 to 300 mm between the seat and the top of the table; that gives a seat height of roughly 460 to 490 mm.

Then measure the free space between the table legs, not just the length of the top. Allow 700 to 750 mm per person and at least 800 mm of walking space behind the chairs.

Dining chairs with or without armrests

Armrests help you stand up and make long meals more comfortable. They do need space: the armrest has to pass under the table edge or apron, or the chair stays some distance from the table. Measure the clearance under your top before you choose.

Without armrests you pull up more easily and can often fit more chairs side by side. Gigi is 450 mm wide with open sides; Vince has fixed metal legs and no armrests either. The wooden Merano comes without and with armrests, so you can place two armchairs in the same style at the ends of the table.

Swivel dining chairs

A swivel chair turns towards whoever sits next to you; there is no need to slide it across the floor. Xylo has a swivel base with an automatic return mechanism that brings the seat back to its starting position. With Bento, Ronda and Slide you choose between a fixed and a swivel base.

Leave a little space beside a swivel chair to turn. If the chairs stand close together, a fixed base is calmer.

Wooden dining chairs in oak, beech or walnut

Capri, Lofty, Merano, Modalto and Moly have a wooden frame that you choose in oak, beech or walnut, with an upholstered seat. Lofty and Modalto have armrests; Merano comes with or without.

With an oak dining table or a walnut dining table you can match the chair to the wood, or deliberately contrast it. The tone varies even within one species, so hold a sample or photo of your table top next to the chair before you decide.

Fabric dining chairs

Most chairs are upholstered. Some models come in a few set colours, others in a wide fabric collection. Choosing fabric, judging colour and care are covered under fabric dining chairs.

Comfortable, ergonomic seating

Comfort at the table depends on seat height, seat depth and the back. Your feet rest flat on the floor and your thighs are roughly horizontal. If you often linger at the table, choose a higher back or armrests.

How many dining chairs fit your table?

Allow 700 to 750 mm per person. At a 2000 mm table that means two to three chairs on each long side, depending on where the legs are. For a round or oval table, the circumference counts, not the diameter.
