A walnut table top made to measure in solid American walnut (black walnut). This wood has a naturally rich chocolate-brown colour with a fine, closed grain. Unlike oak, walnut does not need to be stained: the natural colour is a statement on its own. Each top is 40 mm thick, finished with clear 2K lacquer that protects the wood while letting the colour shine through.

When do you choose a walnut table top?
You want a dark, warm top without needing to choose a stain colour. You value a refined, closed grain rather than the coarser oak grain. You are looking for a premium wood species with character.

American walnut: colour and grain

American walnut (Juglans nigra) is prized for its deep colour and smooth texture. The heartwood ranges from purple-brown to dark chocolate. The sapwood is slightly lighter, creating a subtle contrast within each top. The grain is fine and closed, giving the surface a smooth, almost silky feel.

Over the years, walnut becomes slightly lighter in colour. Where most wood species darken, walnut does the opposite: the deepest tones gradually become warmer and more honey-like. This is a natural process that adds to the wood's character.

Combining with a base

Maintenance

The 2K lacquer finish makes daily maintenance simple: wipe with a damp cloth. Use trivets for hot pans. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to prevent uneven lightening. What finish does a walnut table top get?
Every walnut table top is finished with a clear 2K lacquer. This professional two-component lacquer protects the wood against stains and moisture without altering its natural dark colour. Other colours or finishes are not available for walnut: the clear lacquer shows the wood as it is.
How large can a walnut table top be?
The maximum size is 2600 x 1200 mm. That is slightly smaller than oak (3000 x 1200 mm) due to the availability of wide walnut boards. For most dining tables seating up to eight, this is more than enough. All tops are 40 mm of solid wood.
Will a walnut top fit my existing frame?
In most cases yes. A 40 mm walnut top fits almost any sturdy metal or wooden frame. Measure the dimensions of your current top or frame carefully and factor in the overhang you want. If you are unsure, get in touch for advice.
What is the difference between walnut and oak as a table top?
The biggest difference is colour and grain. Walnut is naturally dark chocolate brown with a fine, closed grain. Oak is lighter with a coarser, more open grain. Walnut is more dimensionally stable but slightly softer than oak. Walnut only comes in clear lacquer, while oak is available in 19 colours. Oak is available up to 3000 x 1200 mm, walnut up to 2600 x 1200 mm.
How do I care for a walnut table top?
A walnut top with 2K lacquer is low-maintenance. Day-to-day cleaning is done with a damp cloth or microfibre cloth. Avoid prolonged contact with standing water and use coasters for hot pans. After years of heavy use the top can be sanded back and relacquered.
Does walnut change colour over time?
Yes, but differently to most other woods. Where oak darkens, walnut actually becomes slightly lighter and warmer in tone under UV light. It is a gradual, subtle process that many people find improves the look. The dark base colour remains.

Is a walnut table top suitable as a window sill?
