Four types of granite

Granite is a volcanic natural stone and one of the hardest materials. Every top has its own pattern, so no two are the same. The top is 30 mm thick and up to 2400 × 1000 mm.

  • Steel Grey leather: dark grey with a cool undertone, lightly textured surface.
  • Coffee Brown leather: warm brown with light and dark nuances.
  • Tan Brown polished: brown with black, smooth and glossy.
  • Nero Assoluto: deep black, honed (matt) or polished.

Polished, honed or leather?

The finish decides how the top feels and how quickly marks show.

  • Polished (gloss): smooth and glossy, the colour and crystals show clearly. Stains and fingerprints are more visible.
  • Honed (matt): matt and soft to the touch, shows stains less quickly than polished.
  • Leather: lightly textured; fingerprints and water drops are less visible.

For a dining table in daily use, honed and leather are the most practical. Polished works best on a sideboard or side table.

Care and impregnation

Granite must be impregnated after delivery and again every two to three years. The impregnation stops liquids from soaking into the stone.

  • Clean with a damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner.
  • No vinegar, lemon or other acidic cleaners: they attack the surface.
  • Granite is not heat resistant. A hot pan can crack it through thermal shock, so always use a trivet.

Cleaners for natural stone are under maintenance.

Granite or ceramic?

Ceramic resists heat, scratches and stains and never needs impregnating; it is heavy, though, and sensitive to a hard knock on the edge. Granite needs more care, but it is real natural stone with a pattern that differs in every top.

For the least upkeep, choose ceramic. For natural stone, choose granite. More in our ceramic and granite comparison.

Granite or wood?

Granite looks cool and clean-lined; wood brings warmth and grain. Oak and walnut are not suitable for outdoor use and need a trivet under a hot pan, just like granite. Compare them under wooden table tops.

Granite table top for outdoors

Granite is also supplied as a garden table; see the granite garden tables. For outdoors, choose a base that can stand outside: stainless steel 304 is naturally corrosion resistant, and a steel base gets an extra primer coat under the powder coating. Steel with primer and stainless steel are equally suitable outdoors; the choice is about looks.

Shape, base and ordering

Choose the type of granite and the shape: rectangle, rectangle with rounded corners, round, oval, Danish oval or a top with half circles at the short ends. Enter the size and choose a base; the price updates with every choice.

A dark top such as Nero Assoluto suits a black base for an all-dark table, or brushed stainless steel for contrast. All bases are under table bases, complete tables under granite dining tables.

The top is cut to size in the workshop in Maasbree, the Netherlands. Tables, table tops and bases: delivery within 4 weeks, or at a lower rate within 8 weeks. Collection in Maasbree is also possible.

Frequently asked questions

Is granite heat resistant?
No. A hot pan can crack the top through thermal shock. Always use a trivet.
How often should granite be impregnated?
After delivery, and again every two to three years after that. The impregnation stops liquids soaking into the stone.
How do I clean granite?
With a damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner. Do not use vinegar, lemon or other acidic cleaners.
What is the difference between polished, honed and leather?
Polished is smooth and glossy but shows stains and fingerprints sooner. Honed is matt and soft. Leather is lightly textured and shows fingerprints less. For a dining table, honed and leather are the most practical.
How large can a granite top be?
Up to 2400 × 1000 mm, at a thickness of 30 mm. You enter the size you want in the configurator.
Why are there no granite samples?
Material samples are available for ceramic, oak and walnut, not for granite. Granite is natural stone and every top has its own pattern, so a sample would only give an impression anyway.
