Is an oak dining table right for you?

You choose oak for the grain and warmth of real wood. The top is 40 mm solid European oak; no two tops are the same.

Quick guide

  • You want a colour that matches your floor or cabinets: choose a stain colour.
  • You want to oil and maintain the wood yourself: choose untreated.
  • You want dark wood without stain: see walnut dining tables.
  • The table has to stand outside, or you want to put a pan straight on the top: choose ceramic.

Solid oak: colour, grain and character

  • Colour: honey to golden brown tones. Oak improves with age and gains a deeper, warmer colour.
  • Grain: a pronounced open grain. Because stain colours the wood rather than covering it, the grain stays visible.
  • Thickness and size: 40 mm, up to 3000 × 1200 mm, made to measure to the millimetre.
  • Limitation: oak is not suitable for outdoors.

Stain colour or untreated

An oak top is stained in the colour you choose and finished with two coats of clear matt lacquer. The light colours include Natural, Corn Silk, Palm Beach, Cinnamon, Barley White and Mud; there are also darker tones and Black.

Choose untreated and the top stays bare: no stain, no lacquer. You finish it yourself, for example with oil.

Knots filled to match the top

Knots are filled with a two-component filler in three colours. Light stain colours get a light filler, dark stain colours a dark one, and only Black gets black. On an untreated top you choose the knot filler yourself: light, dark or black.

Solid oak or veneer

Solid oak is wood all the way through. Veneer is a thin layer of oak on chipboard or MDF.

Oak is moderately hard: it copes with normal family use, but a hard knock can leave a scratch. A scratch in solid oak can be sanded out and refinished; with veneer that is not possible.

Oak dining tables in five shapes

  • Rectangular: the most seats per metre.
  • Round: for four to six people in a square room.
  • Oval: plenty of seats without corners.
  • Danish oval: straight long sides with rounded ends.
  • Semicircle ends: straight long sides with half-round ends.

What size oak dining table?

Allow 700 to 750 mm per person and at least 800 mm of free space around the table. The standard table height is 760 mm.

  • 2000 mm long, with a seat at each end: 6 people.
  • 2400 mm long: 8 people.
  • 3000 mm long, the maximum in oak: 10 people.

Oak or walnut

Oak is lighter in colour, comes in a stain colour of your choice and goes up to 3000 × 1200 mm. Walnut is deep chocolate brown by nature and goes up to 2600 × 1200 mm. The full comparison is on wooden dining tables.

Base for an oak table

The base is steel or stainless steel; the choice is about looks. Steel is welded in our workshop in Maasbree, the Netherlands, and powder-coated with a fine texture in one of 10 standard colours. Grade 304 stainless steel is brushed as standard.

Powder coating is a layer of lacquer that can be damaged by a heavy impact; stainless steel shows fingerprints, but they are easy to wipe off. All models are in table bases.

Caring for an oak dining table

  • Wipe a lacquered top with a damp or microfibre cloth; no special products needed.
  • Put hot pans and dishes on a trivet.
  • You oil an untreated top yourself and maintain it yourself afterwards.

More tips are on the care page.

Frequently asked questions

Is an oak dining table suitable for a family with children?
Yes, with one caveat. Oak is moderately hard and the lacquer protects against stains and moisture, but a hard knock can leave a scratch. In solid oak you can sand that scratch out and refinish it.
Can I order my oak table untreated?
Yes. The top then stays bare, with no stain and no lacquer, and you finish it yourself. You choose the colour of the knot filler yourself: light, dark or black.
Does oak get darker?
Yes. Oak gains a deeper, warmer colour over the years.
How do I care for a lacquered oak dining table?
Wipe the top with a damp or microfibre cloth; no special products needed. Put hot pans on a trivet.
Can an oak dining table stand outside?
No, oak is not suitable for outdoor use. For outdoors, choose a ceramic top.
