Choose chairs for your table

Is a stainless steel dining table for you?

You choose stainless steel for its look: cool, silver-grey and brushed. The metal has no coating, so nothing can flake off. Functionally it is not better than steel: a steel base with an outdoor primer is just as suitable outdoors. It is a choice for the eye.

Quick guide

Metal without a paint layer, silver-grey: stainless steel. A base in black, white, grey or bronze:steel, powder-coated in 10 standard colours. Unsure about the top: read on under "Which top on stainless steel".

Grade 304: what it is and what you notice

  • Grade 304 (18/8): stainless steel with chromium and nickel. Naturally corrosion-resistant, no coating.
  • Brushed: the standard finish. A fine line in the metal gives a soft, matt sheen.
  • Fingerprints: visible on the brushed surface, but easy to remove with a damp cloth.
  • Colour as well: if you do want a colour, stainless steel can optionally be powder-coated in a RAL colour.

Stainless steel or steel?

Both bases are welded in our workshop in Maasbree, the Netherlands, and are strong enough for daily use. The difference:

  • Stainless steel: no paint layer that can be damaged, brushed silver-grey. Fingerprints show.
  • Steel: powder-coated in a fine texture, 3 to 5 times thicker than wet paint, in 10 standard colours. Powder coating is a paint layer that can be damaged by a heavy impact.

Outdoors it makes no difference: steel with an outdoor primer and stainless steel are equally suitable. Choose on colour and look.

Which top on stainless steel?

  • Ceramic: heat-, scratch- and stain-resistant, UV-stable, in 29 colours. With stainless steel, suitable indoors and out.
  • Oak: 40 mm solid, warm against the cool metal. Indoors only.
  • Walnut: deep chocolate brown, 40 mm solid. Indoors only.
  • Granite: 30 mm natural stone in four types. Sealed after delivery and every two to three years.

Stainless steel bases

Stainless steel dining tables stand on the Amsterdam, Brussel, Dublin, Helsinki, Sydney, Riga 80x40 and Riga 80x80 bases. Not every model fits every shape; the configurator shows which combinations work. Separate bases are under stainless steel table bases.

Size and shape

A dining table is 760 mm high as standard. Allow 700 to 750 mm of table edge per person and at least 800 mm of free space around it. You set the size of the top to the millimetre: rectangular, oval, Danish oval, round or half circle.

  • 1600 mm long: two people per long side, six with the ends.
  • 2200 mm long: three per long side, eight with the ends.
  • 3000 mm long: four per long side, ten with the ends.

Caring for stainless steel

Wipe the base with a damp cloth, following the brushed grain. Do not use a scouring pad: it scratches the brushed finish. No lacquer or treatment is needed.
