Why a round ceramic dining table?

A round table turns a meal into a conversation: nobody sits at the head and everyone can see each other. With no corners it is easy to walk around, even in a smaller dining room or kitchen. Ceramic adds a top that needs very little attention.

Quick guide

Two to six people, square room: round. More than six people or a long room: an oval ceramic dining table. Prefer warm wood:round oak dining tables.

Which diameter should you choose?

Allow 700 to 750 mm of table edge per person. The edge of a round table is 3.14 times the diameter. Keep at least 800 mm of free space around it; standard table height is 760 mm.

  • Ø 1100 mm: about 3450 mm of edge, generous for four people.
  • Ø 1300 mm: about 4080 mm of edge, for five people.
  • Ø 1500 mm: about 4710 mm of edge, for six people.

With a large diameter the centre of the table becomes hard to reach. For more than six people an oval usually works better. Check the numbers against the width of your own chairs too.

Ceramic on a round top: pros and cons

  • Heat-resistant: the pan can go straight from the hob to the table.
  • Scratch- and stain-resistant: the top is sintered and non-porous; wine and coffee do not soak in.
  • UV- and frost-resistant: no fading in the sun, less than 0.1% water absorption, so it suits outdoor use too.
  • 29 colours, 12 or 20 mm thick: from plain white and anthracite to concrete look and marble look. A round top is seen from every side, so a strong pattern stands out more.

The downside: ceramic is heavy, so a large round top is not something you move on your own. The edge is sensitive to hard point impact, such as a heavy pan dropped on it.

A base for a round top

Round ceramic tables stand on the Geneve, Lissabon and Praag bases in steel, and Riga 80x40 and Riga 80x80 in steel or stainless steel. They are welded in our workshop in Maasbree, the Netherlands.

  • Steel: powder-coated in a fine texture, 3 to 5 times thicker than wet paint, in 10 standard colours. A heavy impact can damage the coating.
  • Stainless steel: grade 304, brushed and corrosion-resistant without coating. Fingerprints show but are easy to remove.

Outdoors, steel with an outdoor primer and stainless steel are equally suitable; you choose on looks. More under steel dining tables and stainless steel dining tables.

Round ceramic or round oak?

Choose ceramic for a table you do not need to protect, one that can stand on the patio too. Choose oak for warmth and a grain that deepens in colour over the years; oak is not suitable for outdoor use. All round tables in one place: round dining tables.

Care

A damp cloth is enough, with a mild cleaning agent for grease. Sealing or oiling is not needed. More on the care page.

Frequently asked questions

Which diameter should I choose for a round ceramic dining table?
Allow 700 to 750 mm of table edge per person; the edge is 3.14 times the diameter. Ø 1100 mm is generous for four, Ø 1300 mm suits five and Ø 1500 mm six. Keep at least 800 mm of space around it.
Can a round ceramic dining table stand outdoors?
Yes. Ceramic is UV- and frost-resistant (EN ISO 10545-12). Outdoors, choose stainless steel or steel with an outdoor primer; both are equally suitable.
Can a hot pan go on a round ceramic top?
Yes, ceramic is heat-resistant. Do not bang a heavy cast-iron pan down on the edge, though, because the edge is sensitive to hard point impact.
What are the downsides of a round ceramic top?
Ceramic is heavy, so a large round top is not something you move on your own. A hard knock can damage the edge. If you want warmth and a grain you can feel, a round oak dining table suits you better.
