Round dining tables

Choose chairs for your tableWhich diameter round dining table for how many people?
The number of seats depends on the circumference: pi times the diameter, divided by 700 to 750 mm per person. Rounded down, that gives:
- Ø 1000 mm: 4 people.
- Ø 1200 mm: 5 people, or 4 with room to spare.
- Ø 1300 mm: 5 people.
- Ø 1400 to 1500 mm: 6 people.
- Ø 1600 mm: 6 with room to spare, 7 at a squeeze.
Keep at least 800 mm of free space around the table. A table of Ø 1400 mm therefore needs a clear floor 3000 mm wide. The standard table height is 760 mm.
Quick guide
- Eating with children every day, or a table that may also stand outside: choose a round ceramic dining table.
- Warm wood with an open grain, stained or untreated: choose a round oak dining table.
- Dark wood without stain: choose walnut.
- Often eight or more at the table: choose an oval or Danish oval dining table.
Pros and cons of a round table
- Pro: everyone sits the same distance from the centre and can talk to everyone.
- Pro: no corners, which helps with small children and in a tight walkway.
- Pro: fits well in a square room or a bay window.
- Con: above six people the diameter grows quickly and the centre of the top becomes hard to reach.
- Con: against a wall you lose more seats than with a rectangle.

Round dining table in ceramic, oak or walnut
Round ceramic dining table
Ceramic is resistant to heat, scratches and stains, UV-resistant and frost-resistant: suitable indoors and outdoors. It is heavy, though, and sensitive to hard point impact on the edge. There are 29 colours and the top is 12 or 20 mm thick.
Round oak dining table
40 mm solid European oak, honey to golden brown with an open grain. Stained in the colour you choose with two coats of clear matt lacquer, or untreated. Not suitable for outdoors.
Round walnut dining table
40 mm solid walnut, deep chocolate brown with purple undertones. In long periods of direct sunlight it can turn slightly lighter; UV blockers in the lacquer limit this. Not suitable for outdoors. More on walnut dining tables.
Base under a round top
Check in the configurator where the legs of the base are. That decides whether a chair can pull up anywhere, and it matters more at a round table than at a rectangle.
The base is steel or stainless steel; the choice is about looks. Steel is welded in our workshop in Maasbree, the Netherlands, and powder-coated with a fine texture in one of 10 standard colours; a heavy impact can damage the coating. Grade 304 stainless steel is brushed as standard; fingerprints show but are easy to wipe off.
A round table outdoors
Outdoors, choose a ceramic top: ceramic is UV-resistant, does not fade in sunlight and is frost-resistant. Combine it with stainless steel or steel with outdoor primer; both are equally suitable outdoors. Oak and walnut belong indoors.
