Round dining table: pros and cons + tips

Is a round dining table right for you? Discover the pros and cons, ideal sizes and materials.

Why a round dining table?

A round shape invites conversation: everyone sits at the same distance from the centre, and nobody sits at the head. In smaller rooms round often works better than rectangular because there are no sharp corners to walk around.

Main advantages

  • Togetherness: everyone can see everyone
  • Space: no corners in the way
  • Safe: no sharp edges with young children
  • Flexible: always room for an extra chair

Which size for how many people?

A round table uses its entire circumference. As a guide:

  • Ø 100 cm: 4 people
  • Ø 120 cm: 4–6 people (most popular size)
  • Ø 140 cm: 6–8 people
  • Ø 160 cm: 8–10 people

Rule of thumb: allow roughly 60 cm of circumference per person for comfortable dining. To be sure, mark the circle on the floor with painter's tape — far more telling than a number on paper.

Which material?

  • Ceramic: scratch-resistant, heat-resistant, low maintenance
  • Oak: warm, gains character over time
  • Walnut: dark in colour, fine grain
  • Granite: robust natural stone, every top unique
