Why an oval dining table?

An oval top has no corners to bump your hip on and no head seat where someone sits apart. It is easier to walk around than a rectangle of the same length.

Quick guide

  • You want a soft shape for a narrower room: choose oval.
  • You want full seats right up to the ends and chairs neatly in line: choose Danish oval.
  • You eat with four to six people in a square room: choose a round dining table.

Oval or Danish oval: the difference

On an oval table the long sides curve too, so the top narrows towards the ends. A Danish oval table has straight long sides and only rounded ends.

The result: at a Danish oval top the end seats are full places and the chairs along the sides stand in line. A classic oval looks softer, but at the same length it gives a little less room at the ends.

Which length oval dining table for how many people?

Allow 700 to 750 mm per person along the sides and at least 800 mm of free space around the table. The standard table height is 760 mm. Because an oval narrows towards the ends, use 750 mm there.

  • 1800 mm: 4 people, or 6 with someone at each end.
  • 2000 to 2200 mm: 6 people.
  • 2400 mm: 8 people.
  • 3000 mm: 10 people.

Measure your room and subtract 800 mm on each side. Then mark out the oval on the floor with tape to see how it sits in the room.

Oval dining tables by material

Oval ceramic dining table

Ceramic is resistant to heat, scratches and stains, UV-resistant and frost-resistant: suitable indoors and outdoors. It is heavy, though, and sensitive to hard point impact on the edge. There are 29 colours. All models are in oval ceramic dining tables.

Oval oak dining table

40 mm solid European oak, stained in the colour you choose or left untreated, up to 3000 × 1200 mm. Warm, with a pronounced open grain; not for outdoors. See oval oak dining tables.

Oval walnut dining table

40 mm solid walnut, deep chocolate brown, up to 2600 × 1200 mm. In long periods of direct sunlight it can turn slightly lighter. More about this wood on walnut dining tables.

Oval granite dining table

30 mm natural stone, up to 2400 × 1000 mm, polished or honed. Every top has its own pattern. Seal granite on arrival and then every two to three years, and put hot pans on a trivet. See granite dining tables.

Base under an oval top

The base is steel or stainless steel; the choice is about looks. Steel is welded in our workshop in Maasbree, the Netherlands, and powder-coated with a fine texture in one of 10 standard colours. Grade 304 stainless steel is naturally corrosion-resistant and brushed as standard.

Powder coating can be damaged by a heavy impact; stainless steel shows fingerprints, but they wipe off easily. Outdoors, steel with outdoor primer and stainless steel are equally suitable.

Care by material

  • Ceramic: wipe with a damp cloth; the material is non-porous.
  • Oak and walnut: wipe with a damp cloth, no abrasives, hot pans on a trivet.
  • Granite: pH-neutral cleaner, no vinegar or lemon; seal on arrival and every two to three years.

More tips are on the care page.

Frequently asked questions

Which oval dining table for 6 people?
An oval of 2000 to 2200 mm. That is based on 700 to 750 mm per person along the sides. Keep at least 800 mm of free space around it.
Which length oval table for 8 people?
Plan on 2400 mm. Because an oval narrows towards the ends, 750 mm per person is most comfortable there.
What is the difference between oval and Danish oval?
On an oval the long sides curve too, so the top narrows towards the ends. A Danish oval has straight long sides and only rounded ends, so the end seats are full places.
Can an oval dining table stand outside?
With a ceramic top, yes: ceramic is UV-resistant and frost-resistant. Combine it with stainless steel or steel with outdoor primer. Oak and walnut are not suitable for outdoors.
Is any size possible?
Yes, within the material's maximum and to the millimetre. Oak goes up to 3000 × 1200 mm, walnut up to 2600 × 1200 mm and granite up to 2400 × 1000 mm.
