Choose chairs for your table

Why an oval oak dining table?

An oval top has no corners, so no edge at hip height and no separate head seat. Oak adds the warmth and open grain of solid wood.

Quick guide

  • You want a soft shape in warm wood: choose oval oak.
  • You want chairs in line and full seats at the ends: choose Danish oval.
  • You want dark wood without stain: choose walnut in oval dining tables.
  • The table has to stand outside: choose an oval ceramic dining table, not oak.

Which length oval oak dining table?

Allow 700 to 750 mm per person along the sides and at least 800 mm of free space around the table. An oval narrows towards the ends, so use 750 mm there. The standard table height is 760 mm.

  • 1800 mm: 4 people, or 6 with someone at each end.
  • 2000 to 2200 mm: 6 people.
  • 2400 mm: 8 people.
  • 3000 mm, the maximum in oak: 10 people.

Does an oval oak table fit your room?

Add twice 800 mm of walking space to the length and width of the top. A table of 2400 × 1000 mm therefore needs a clear floor of 4000 × 2600 mm.

If your room is narrow, the oval shape helps: without corners it is easier to walk past. Mark out the oval on the floor with tape first and place chairs around it.

Stain colour on an oval top

The top is stained in the colour you choose and finished with two coats of clear matt lacquer. Stain colours the wood rather than covering it, so the pronounced open grain stays visible. Light colours include Natural, Corn Silk and Barley White; for almost black, choose Black.

Knots are filled in a colour that suits the stain: light, dark or black. Choose untreated and the top stays bare, you finish it yourself and you choose the knot filler yourself.

Honest about oak

  • Oak is moderately hard: it copes with normal family use, but a hard knock can leave a scratch. In solid oak you sand it out.
  • No two tops are the same; the grain of your table will differ from the photo.
  • Oak gains a deeper, warmer colour over the years.
  • Oak is not suitable for outdoors.

Base under an oval oak top

The base is steel or stainless steel; the choice is about looks. Steel is welded in our workshop in Maasbree, the Netherlands, and powder-coated with a fine texture in one of 10 standard colours. Grade 304 stainless steel is brushed as standard.

On steel, a heavy impact can damage the coating; stainless steel shows fingerprints, but they are easy to wipe off.

Care

Wipe the lacquered top with a damp or microfibre cloth and put hot pans on a trivet. You oil and maintain an untreated top yourself. More on the care page.

Frequently asked questions

Which length oval oak dining table for 8 people?
Plan on 2400 mm. An oval narrows towards the ends, so allow 750 mm per person there. Keep at least 800 mm of free space around it.
Is an oval oak dining table available in black?
Yes, with the stain colour Black. The top then gets two coats of clear matt lacquer; the open grain stays visible. With Black, knots are filled in black.
What is the difference between oval and Danish oval in oak?
On an oval the long sides curve too, so the top narrows towards the ends. Danish oval has straight long sides and only rounded ends, so chairs stand in line and the end seats are full places.
How large can an oval oak dining table be?
Up to 3000 × 1200 mm, made to measure to the millimetre. At 3000 mm it seats ten.
