Which sofa suits your living room? That depends on the available space, the desired seating comfort and how you use the sofa. A large family has different requirements than a couple who mainly sits together. Below you can read what to look for and what the collection at Tulmans Furniture offers.
Which type of sofa suits you?
Large living room, many seats - modular sofa: combine corner sections, sofa sections and a chaise lounge as you wish.
Dining area with bench - dining bench: compact, sturdy and at the right seat height for the table.
Reading corner or extra seat - armchair or pouf: takes up little space and is easy to move.
Prefer to see and sit first - visit the showroom in Maasbree, Netherlands and test all models.
A modular sofa consists of separate elements that you combine as you wish. A corner section, sofa section, pouf or chaise lounge: each component is available separately and can be added or rearranged later. This makes a modular sofa suitable for living rooms that may be rearranged in the future.
The advantage of modular sofas is flexibility. If you move to a larger home, you add an extra element. If the living room layout changes, you rotate the configuration. The elements are connected to each other but also function as standalone seating.
In the showroom in Maasbree, the modular models are displayed in various configurations so you can see how the elements come together. An advisor will help you find the right combination for your situation and can check the dimensions against your floor plan.
A dining bench combines the function of a sofa with the height of a dining chair. The seat height is around 47 cm, matching most dining tables. A dining bench seats two to three people in the same space as two separate chairs, but with a continuous seat.
A bench at the dining table creates a more informal atmosphere than chairs. A bench on one side of the table, chairs on the other: this is a popular combination. Children enjoy sitting on a bench because they can easily slide in and out.
Combine a dining bench with a custom dining table. View the dining tables collection or design a table in the 3D configurator. This way you match the length of the bench and table precisely.
The sofas in the collection are upholstered in fabric or leather, depending on the model. Each upholstery type has its own characteristics regarding durability, maintenance and appearance.
| Property | Fabric | Leather |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Warm, informal | Sleek, timeless |
| Maintenance | Vacuum regularly, blot stains | Damp cloth, condition periodically |
| Durability | Depends on weave | High, improves with use |
| Suitable with pets | Smooth fabric or microfibre | Yes, scratches become part of patina |
| Colour choice | Wide, per model | More limited, depends on tannery |
The exact fabrics and leather types vary per model. In the showroom, swatches of all available upholsteries are on hand so you can assess the texture and colour in daylight. Feel free to take swatches home to compare with your existing interior.
Seat depth. The seat depth determines how you sit. A deep seat (55 cm or more) invites you to recline. A shallow seat (around 50 cm) gives a more upright posture and is comfortable if you also sit at the table on the sofa. Always test the seat depth in the showroom, as the difference between 50 and 55 cm is greater than it sounds.
Dimensions and space. Measure your living room before you visit. Allow at least 45 cm walking space around the sofa and turning space for doors. For a corner sofa, the space in the corner itself is important: measure the wall on both sides.
Filling. Foam filling is resilient and retains its shape. Down or spring filling is softer but compresses more quickly. A combination of foam core with down layer offers the best of both: firmness with a soft top layer.
Armrests. Wide armrests provide space for a cup, but make the sofa wider. Narrow or no armrests save space. With modular sofas, armrests are sometimes optional.
Tip: bring your floor plan
Bring a sketch or photo of your living room to the showroom. An advisor can then calculate on the spot which configuration fits and whether the sofa will pass through your door and stairwell.
The sofa is usually the largest piece of furniture in the living room and largely determines the atmosphere. A neutral sofa in grey or beige is the most versatile and leaves room for colour accents in cushions and accessories. A sofa in a striking colour or with a pronounced texture becomes the focal point of the room.
Combine a sofa with a coffee table that matches in height and proportion. The top of the coffee table should be level with the sofa seat or a few centimetres lower. Too high or too low is impractical for placing a cup or glass.
Looking for a matching armchair to go with the sofa? In the showroom, sofas and armchairs are displayed side by side so you can assess the combination at once.
All sofas from the collection are on display in the showroom in Maasbree, Netherlands. You can try every model: feel the seat depth, touch the upholstery and assess the dimensions relative to the space. There is no better way to determine if a sofa suits you than actually sitting on it.
The showroom is accessible from all of Limburg, North Brabant and the adjacent parts of Germany and Belgium. View the opening hours and directions. No appointment is necessary, but for personal advice you can get in touch in advance.
Besides sofas, you will find dining tables, dining chairs, coffee tables and armchairs in the showroom. Many customers combine a sofa visit with viewing a dining table or coffee table made to measure.
Sofas are delivered fully assembled to your home. Delivery is available throughout the Netherlands, Belgium and North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany). Lead times vary per model and depend on stock at the manufacturer. In the showroom you receive immediate insight into the current lead time per model.
During delivery, the team checks whether the sofa fits through the stairwell and doors. Have doubts in advance? Bring the measurements of your doorway and stairwell to the showroom so an advisor can calculate this beforehand.
Fabric upholstery: vacuum the sofa weekly with a soft brush attachment. Blot stains immediately with a damp cloth without rubbing. For stubborn stains, use a product suitable for the fabric type. Rotate the cushions regularly so the filling wears evenly and retains its shape longer.
Leather upholstery: wipe the leather monthly with a lightly damp cloth. Use a leather conditioner twice a year to keep the leather supple. Do not place the sofa in direct sunlight or near a radiator, as heat dries out the leather. Small scratches and wear marks become part of the patina and give the leather character.
Questions about maintaining a specific model? In the showroom you receive model-specific care advice. Also see the care page for general tips.
