A walnut dining table in solid American walnut (black walnut) stands out through its deep chocolate-brown colour and fine closed grain. This wood is dimensionally stable, finished with clear 2K lacquer and available in five shapes up to 2600 x 1200 mm. Configure your table in 3D.

Is walnut the right choice for you?

Yes, if you want a naturally dark wood without needing a stain. Yes, if you value a refined, smooth grain. Compare with oak (19 stain colours, up to 3000 mm) or ceramic (maintenance-free, 28 colours).

American walnut: characteristics

American walnut (Juglans nigra) has a naturally rich colour ranging from purple-brown to dark chocolate. The fine, closed grain gives the surface a smooth, refined feel that sets it apart from the more pronounced grain of oak. Each top is distinctive: the colour variation between heartwood and sapwood creates natural contrasts within the slab.

The top is 40 mm thick, finished with clear 2K matte lacquer that protects the wood while letting the natural colour fully show. Over the years, walnut lightens slightly, developing warmer, honey-like tones.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between walnut and oak for a dining table?
Walnut (American walnut / black walnut) is naturally dark chocolate brown with a fine, closed grain. Oak is lighter in colour with a coarser, more open grain. Walnut is more dimensionally stable and moves less when humidity changes. Oak is moderately hard; walnut is slightly softer than oak. Oak is available in larger sizes (up to 3000 x 1200 mm versus 2600 x 1200 mm). Walnut is supplied only with a clear lacquer; for oak you can choose from 19 stain colours.
What finish is applied to a walnut dining table?
Walnut dining tables are finished with a clear 2K lacquer (two-component lacquer). This professional finish protects the wood against stains and moisture without altering the natural dark colour. The lacquer is applied in several coats and sanded between layers for a smooth, flat surface.
How large can a made-to-measure walnut dining table be?
The maximum top size for walnut is 2600 x 1200 mm with a top thickness of 40 mm. You choose the exact dimensions within these limits. If you need a larger table, oak is an alternative and is available up to 3000 x 1200 mm.
Which shapes are available for a walnut dining table?
Walnut dining tables are available in five shapes: rectangular, oval, Danish oval, round and Racetrack. Rectangular seats the most people. Oval and Danish oval have no sharp corners. Round suits four to six people. The Racetrack is elongated with two rounded short ends and straight long sides and stands freely in the room.
How do I look after a walnut dining table?
A walnut dining table with 2K lacquer is low-maintenance. For daily cleaning a damp cloth or microfibre cloth is enough. Use coasters for hot pans and avoid prolonged contact with standing water. After years of heavy use the top can be sanded back and re-lacquered.
Does walnut change colour over time?
Yes, walnut becomes slightly lighter over the years. Whereas most woods darken under UV light, walnut does the opposite: the deepest chocolate tones gradually turn a touch warmer and more honey-coloured. It is a slow, subtle process.
Which base suits a walnut dining table best?
With walnut you can choose powder-coated steel (10 RAL colours) or brushed stainless steel. Matt black steel is the most popular combination and reinforces the dark, warm character of the wood. Brushed stainless steel adds a cooler, more industrial accent through the contrast between silver and warm timber. In the 3D configurator you combine top and base and see the result instantly.
