What is Danish oval?

Danish oval is a cross between a rectangle and an oval. The long sides are straight, the ends gently rounded. The top keeps its full width almost to the ends, the end seats are full places, and nobody bumps into a corner.

Quick guide

  • You want the seating of a rectangle without corners: choose Danish oval.
  • You want a softer shape that narrows towards the ends: choose oval.
  • You eat with four to six people in a square room: choose round.

Danish oval, oval or rectangle

  • Compared with oval: on an oval the long sides curve too and the top narrows towards the ends. Danish oval keeps the same width along its length, so the chairs stand in line.
  • Compared with a rectangle: as many seats along the sides, but without corners. Handy with small children and in a tight walkway.
  • Compared with semicircle ends: there, each end is a full half circle. A Danish oval end is flatter, so the top stays at full width for longer.

How many people fit at a Danish oval table?

Allow 700 to 750 mm per person along the sides and one seat at each end. Keep at least 800 mm of free space around the table; the standard table height is 760 mm.

  • 2000 mm: 6 people.
  • 2400 mm: 8 people.
  • 2800 mm: 10 people, tight.
  • 3000 mm: 10 people.

Danish oval dining table in granite

30 mm natural stone, up to 2400 × 1000 mm, polished or honed; every top has its own pattern. Seal granite on arrival and then every two to three years, and put hot pans on a trivet. More on granite dining tables.

Base under a Danish oval top

Because the end seats are full places, pay attention to where the legs are with this shape. The configurator shows you.

The base is steel or stainless steel; the choice is about looks. Steel is welded in our workshop in Maasbree, the Netherlands, and powder-coated with a fine texture in one of 10 standard colours; a heavy impact can damage the coating. Grade 304 stainless steel is brushed as standard; fingerprints show but are easy to wipe off.

Danish oval outdoors

With a ceramic top, a Danish oval table can stand outside: ceramic is UV-resistant and frost-resistant. Combine it with stainless steel or steel with outdoor primer; both are equally suitable outdoors. See also ceramic garden tables.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Danish oval and oval?
On a Danish oval only the ends are rounded and the long sides stay straight. On an oval the long sides curve too, so the top narrows towards the ends. A Danish oval therefore keeps the same width along its whole length.
How many people fit at a Danish oval table of 2400 mm?
Eight: three on each long side and one at each end, based on 700 to 750 mm per person. Keep at least 800 mm of free space around it.
Can you sit at the ends?
Yes. Because the end is only gently rounded, there is a full seat at each end.
Does a Danish oval table fit against a wall?
Yes. The straight long side sits neatly along a wall, just like a rectangle. You do lose the seats on that side.
Which sizes are possible?
You choose the size to the millimetre, within the material's maximum: oak up to 3000 × 1200 mm, walnut up to 2600 × 1200 mm and granite up to 2400 × 1000 mm.
