Which seat height suits your kitchen island or bar?

Measure the height of your counter and subtract 250 to 300 mm. That leaves room for your legs without sitting too low at the counter.

  • Kitchen island or worktop of about 900 mm: seat height 600 to 650 mm.
  • Bar or high table of about 1050 mm: seat height 750 to 800 mm.

If you are torn between two heights, choose the lower one. A stool that is too high leaves little room under the counter; a slightly lower stool feels more like sitting at a table.

Quick guide

  • You often turn to the kitchen or to each other: a swivel stool, such as Arno, Bavo or Mito.
  • Children climb on by themselves or the floor is smooth: a fixed base, such as Elly or Flow.
  • Bar stool and dining chair in the same style: Elly and Flow come in both versions.

Swivel bar stool or a fixed base

Arno, Bavo and Mito sit on a metal base that swivels through 360 degrees. You turn to the hob or to your guests without moving the stool, and stepping off to the side is easier.

Elly and Flow have a fixed metal base. It stays still as you climb on and looks calmer in a row. The drawback: to stand up, you push the stool back a little.

Choosing fabric and leg colour

You configure each bar stool with a fabric from a wide collection and a leg colour in black, cream or bronze. More gets spilled at a kitchen island than at the table; a dark or mottled fabric is more forgiving than a light, plain one.

Match the leg colour to the handles, the tap or the base of your table. Black stands out least; bronze and cream add warmth.

Want bar stools and dining chairs in the same fabric? Elly and Flow come as a bar stool and as a dining chair. More on choosing fabric and dealing with stains is under fabric dining chairs.

How many bar stools at your kitchen island?

Measure the length of counter where you actually sit, leaving out the corner and the side with the hob. Lay out the stool width along that length and leave room between the stools to get on and off. Allow a little more for swivel stools, as the seat turns.

Stains, delivery time and guarantee

For fabric bar stools there is the optional, paid All-in-House service: 5 years of stain and seating comfort service on fabric upholstery. One package covers 2 bar stools.

Delivery time varies by model, from 2 to 12 weeks; the product page shows it for your choice. Every bar stool comes with a 2-year guarantee on construction and finish.

Frequently asked questions

What seat height does a bar stool need for a 900 mm kitchen island?
Roughly 600 to 650 mm. Allow 250 to 300 mm between the seat and the counter so you have room for your legs. A bar or high table of about 1050 mm calls for a seat height of 750 to 800 mm.
Do the bar stools swivel?
Arno, Bavo and Mito do: they sit on a metal base that swivels through 360 degrees. Elly and Flow have a fixed metal base. Choose swivel if you often turn towards the kitchen; choose fixed if children climb on by themselves.
Can I get the bar stool in the same fabric as my dining chairs?
Yes, with Elly and Flow. They come as a bar stool and as a dining chair, and you choose the fabric for both. That way the kitchen island and the table share the same fabric.
Which leg colours are available?
Black, cream or bronze. You choose the leg colour together with the fabric in the product options. Match it to the handles, the tap or the base of your table.
What is the delivery time for a bar stool?
It varies by model, from 2 to 12 weeks. The product page shows the delivery time for your choice. Every bar stool comes with a 2-year guarantee on construction and finish.
